  • IBM Research is using artificial intelligence technique to identify new and safer materials to further enhance the battery’s performance

According to a report by Zdnet, IBM Research has said that it has created a battery design that does not use heavy metals. The battery can even outperform lithium-ion batteries on multiple fronts as per the report.

The IBM Research battery is built with materials extracted from sea water. It uses a cobalt and nickel free cathode material and a safe liquid electrolyte with a high flash point. The report said that this reduces flammability as it suppresses lithium metal dendrites during charging.

IBM Research has also teamed up with Mercedes-Benz Research and Development,North America, Central Glass, a battery electrolyte supplier and and battery manufacturer Sidus.

As per the report, this design can outperform batteries that exist at the moment in terms of cost, charging time, power, flammability and efficiency. This can also lead to more sustainability along with enhanced performance.

Charge to 80 per cent in less than five minutes

According to IBM Research, batteries without sourcing issues could be applied to more markets and use cases. It said that its battery design can charge to 80 per cent in less than five minutes and can be used in electric vehicles in the future.

The report said that the battery design will offer more than 10,000 W/L power density and exceed lithium-ion technology. It will also have energy density topping 800 Wh/L. It will work with more than 90 per cent energy efficiency as per IBM Research.

IBM Research is using artificial intelligence technique to identify new and safer materials. This will further enhance the battery’s performance.
