Qualcomm is working with regulators, device makers, app developers and the industrial manufacturing segment to drive 5G ecosystem in India

Cristiano Amon, President, Qualcomm Incorporated

Cristiano Amon, President, Qualcomm Incorporated hopes that India quickly climbs the 5G ladder and opens a new 5G market. He hopes that the transition from 4G to 5G becomes faster than what the previous transition from 3G to 4G.

He believes the new technology will have a profound impact on the industry. He added that he would like India to be an emerging 5G market as fast as it was for 4G.

Driving the 5G ecosystem

The mobile chipset maker has partnered with regulators and device makers for 5G deployment in India. Amon said that Qualcomm would play an important role in driving the 5G ecosystem. “Starting with regulators looking at the spectrum and all the changes required to promote new technology to device-makers to app developers to now other industries such as auto, industrial manufacturing and healthcare,” Amon was quoted sharing about the engagement.

He also pointed out that Qualcomm has been very active for almost two years now, promoting 5G to the ecosystem, including India.

IoT deployment

5G, apart from higher Internet speed, will enable the deployment of Internet of things (IoT) in India and later will play a major role in segments such as manufacturing, retail, education and healthcare, among others.

Telecom and technology companies have been betting huge on 5G. They view 5G as a new era that will level up the way things work in the industries. According to industry experts, the spectrum auction will be held in the later part of 2019, following which 5G services will be rolled out. However, the government of India is yet to specify dates regarding the much-anticipated rollout.

The Qualcomm Incorporated President said that 5G, which is expected to provide a download speed over 1,000 megabits per second, will start commercialising in early 2019 with the launch of 5G smartphones and network rollouts.
