Major engineering company Larsen and Toubro has announced that its subsidiary L&T Construction has bagged a bunch of orders worth ₹24.4 billion (~$358 million).

According to Mercom India, in a statement issued by the company, L&T said it has received an order under the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojna (SAUBHAGYA) program for electrification works in urban and rural areas, augmentation of 33/11kV substations, and for the replacement of conductors with aerial bunched cables.

The company has also secured an order from the Department of Disaster Management for the construction of an underground power cable network in the eastern region of the country.

L&T’s third order comprises installations of grid-connected rooftop solar projects on government buildings under the Alo Shree program. The program was launched by the West Bengal government to install rooftop solar systems on all buildings of government’s local bodies.

In an exclusive interview with Mercom, Milan Kumar, the joint general manager and head of special initiatives for the solar business of L&T, said that given the scenario of rooftops in the country, it seems that there would be great business opportunities for experienced solar‑focused engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies. The country has installed approximately 2 GW of rooftop solar as of March 31, 2018, according to Mercom’s India Solar Project Tracker.

The company has won another order for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of 400 kV double circuit transmission lines in the southern region of India.

Larsen & Toubro is an Indian multinational engaged in technology, engineering, construction, manufacturing and financial services with over $17 billion in revenue. It has a market presence in over 30 countries worldwide.

In February 2018, Mercom reported that L&T Construction had bagged two grid-connected solar photovoltaic projects worth ₹5.9 billion (~$92 million) to be developed in the states of Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. The first project was awarded to L&T by the NLC India Limited (NLCIL) to set up a 100 MW solar project in the state of Tamil Nadu. The second order bagged by L&T is to build a 100 MW solar project in the Bhadla Phase III Solar Park in the state of Rajasthan. This order came from SB Energy One, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group.
