AI is a crucial enabler for achieving the national goals in the areas of healthcare, education and capacity building, COAI director general Rajan S Mathews in a statement said to ET, and added that a positive ecosystem, driven by better connectivity and a financially robust sectoral health, AI would unveil matchless possibilities. The statement comes on the backdrop of the World Telecom and Information Society Day 2018 (WTD 2018) on May 17.

Telecom carriers worldwide have started embracing AI which according to analysts would also play a key role in networks automation and integration of technologies such as virtualization, SDN-NFV and orchestration, as well as for various real-time services and Internet of Things (IoT) applications including Smart Homes and Smart Cities.

Telecom service providers, according to COAI, have already established infrastructural blue-print for services ranging from 3G to 4G, and according to it, they are taking adequate measures to build the foundation for emerging technologies such as 5G, AI and IoT.

The English Daily reported that having taken cognizance of the steep cost of spectrum, the policy, according to Mathews, has also suggested for adopting optimal pricing to ensure sustainable and affordable access to digital communication.

Indian telecom operators have invested Rs 10.4 lakh crores so far in building telecom infrastructure, and more than 3 lakh Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) were added in last one year taking the total count to nearly 17.64 lakh such stations, the COAI statistics revealed.
