Works on the 24.38 kilometres main carriageway from Gachibowli to Shamshabad are underway and once completed, it will be the first expressway in the State to have LED lighting.

HGCL has roped in Philips India Limited for taking up the works and authorities said the initiative to install LED lights will help in slashing the power bills by about 50 per cent. Besides, taking up the works, the company will take up operation and maintenance for five years.

The 24.38 kilometre stretch will be equipped with nearly 5,000 LED lights out of which close to 1,800 lights would be installed on the main carriageway and nearly 2,300 on service roads and the rest on up and down ramps,

The LED lights will be equipped with real-time, web-based monitoring and control system, which aids in automatic dimming, raising fault alarm, in case of any technical glitches and the bulbs go defunct, besides abnormal power consumption. This apart, an alarm will be raised, when unauthorized persons try to open the control boxes.

The objective behind installing LED lights is to avoid accidents due to poor lighting on ORR.

HMDA had planned for installation of LED lights along the entire ORR but with the project costing about Rs 1.8 to Rs 2 billion, authorities wanted to take up the works in phased manner.
