TRAI has proposed recommendations for the Department of Telecom (DoT) to permit electronic KYC of Aadhaar to be one of the validating documents for obtaining a new mobile connection. The recommendation was sent through two weeks ago once the views of the Solicitor General and Attorney General were taken into consideration.
Once the government has finalised the norms, it will allow immediate identification verification via Aadhar card biometrics data for a new mobile connection. As the operators issue new connections via the Aadhaar card, the verification process will get hastened.
To enable the simplification of the electronic verification process via Aadhaar, SEBI has permitted mutual fund houses and market intermediaries to cross-check the credentials of their clients.

TRAI’s chairman R S Sharma stated that through digital authentication, the usage of paper will be eliminated. It will also help in addressing the security concerns through tracking of who has taken the mobile connection.
The proposed move will also lead to a lot of reduction in paperwork as retailers who are selling SIM cards will be able to obtain customer profile and biometric authentication details online using the UIDAI server. UIDAI has presently issued 97.93 crore Aadhaar numbers throughout India.
