IET India launches IoT Panel in Bengaluru

February 21, 2015: Leveraging its position as a multi-disciplinary organisation, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) India today launched its IoT Panel in Bengaluru. The panel will be chaired by Dr. Rishi Bhatnagar, vice president – global head digital enterprise services, Tech Mahindra and aims to be a neutral, authoritative and credible voice for the evolving movement of IoT in India.

The panel also unveiled a whitepaper on IoT titled ‘The Next Horizon – Internet of Things: A Business Must’, authored by Dr Rishi Bhatnagar, chairman of IET India IoT Panel and vice president – global head digital enterprise services, Tech Mahindra.

According to research conducted by Machina Research, an anticipated 34 billion devices will be connected by 2023, 1.9 billion of which will be in India. Recognising the significance of the Internet of Things in connecting and impacting technologies across sectors, the IET India IoT panel will focus on facilitating discussions that will help in making the inevitable connected world more efficient, smart, innovative and safe. It will emphasise on technology, security and regulatory concerns and the need for nurturing capabilities and talent for a quicker adoption of IoT in all spheres.

“This panel is a volunteer-led visionary neutral think tank in the IoT space and would be focussing on the role of India in the IoT space”, said Dr Rishi Bhatnagar, chair of the IET India IoT Panel. “The panel will have 6 working groups on IoT applications which will concentrate on IoT approaches that are being applied across market segments and various businesses. Besides these, the core panel has set up of a global advisory panel and a special working group around IoT Labs and on regulatory and legal points.”

The panel will also constitute sub panels focussing on the application of IoT in agriculture, retail, energy and healthcare domains. Each of these sub panels will work towards undertaking neutral pilots and studies and publishing white papers around the application of IoT in the respective domains.

A Global Advisory Body comprising of Prof William Webb, president of the IET, Sir Robin Saxby, ex-founding CEO and chairman of ARM Holdings plc and Jim Morrish, founder and chief research offer, Machina Research, UK.

Speaking on the occasion, Shekhar Sanyal, director and country head, The IET India said, “The Internet of Things is going to change the way we live, conduct business and communicate. Speedy and mature adoption of Internet of Things requires experts across sectors to come together to discuss trends, issues and solutions. Data Security and Data Privacy issues need to be addressed. Capability and skill building around IoT needs to happen. The IET India IoT Panel comprises of experts from various sectors. The panel aims to be a neutral, authoritative and credible thought leadership platform that will discuss advancements in the area and bring all relevant stakeholders together. It will also be the guiding voice about the pitfalls and challenges which need to be addressed for the IoT to become a reality. I am personally very excited about the launch of this panel as I believe this will be a much needed catalyst to accelerate the adoption of IoT by both consumers and enterprise.”
