IIT-kanpur-DEC-4Saturday,December 6, 2014: The IIT Kanpur made the final set up for the first roof top solar plant to meet the electricity need at the campus. The solar power plant of 50KW was originally inaugurated last year, after which the efforts to strengthen the power plant set up were in flow. The rooftop solar PV plants established over the western labs and faculty building on the campus was inaugurated by Professor Indranil Manna, director, IIT, Kanpur.

The installed plant is of 344 KWp capacity. Professor RS Anand said that in the phase I, the solar power plant has been established in the rooftops with the given breakdown of Western Lab (212.45 KWp), Western Lab Extension (28 KWp), Faculty Building (80.08 KWp) and Northern Lab II (24 KWp).

He further stated that this power PV plant has a mix of high efficiency and normal efficiency silicon modules based technologies. The total cost of installed 344 KWp solar PV plants is close to Rs. 30 million.

Professor Anand stated that while in the second phase over 1400 KWp roof top solar plants will be installed. He stated that these plants are functional and perhaps are monitored on line of their performance. The established plant will produce 502240 units of electricity per year at an average rate of 4 KWh/KWp/day generation. Thus, the cost of installation will be covered in less than 10 years.

The solar plant came into action in the Sep- Oct 2014 and had successfully generated a total of 81,700 units of electricity till 28 November and fed into IIT-K grid.
