Saturday, June 28, 2014: Reviving its defunct portal, the Bureau of Indian Standards is all set to take the process of registering electronic products online. The online registration process under the compulsory registration order (CRO) will facilitate the delay in procedure that was hampering the launch of some products.
Speaking about the development, Anwar Shirpurwala, executive director of Manufacturers Association for Information Technology, said, “The whole process is manual, it has to become online. Both testing and registration is a 3-4 month long process. It has to shrink. A product has six months life. By the time I (the manufacturer) get my product registered, it is already reached end of life. (We) can’t even get it to the country.”
The CRO, that was announced last year, makes it mandatory for testing and registration of 15 types of electronics products, both domestic and international. This is done for compliance purposes with Indian standards, before the products hit the shelves.
