Battery-assisted passive RFID chip

In April 2013, EM Microelectronic launched the EM4325V11, a versatile and multipurpose, battery-assisted passive (BAP) RFID chip with a calibrated temperature sensor. The integrated temperature sensor monitors ambient temperature from -40°C to +60°C with 9-bit measurement accuracy of up to 0.5 per cent over the full temperature range. In pure passive mode, the temperature sensor can be used for field-powered snapshot readings. But the chip can also be programmed to perform self-monitoring with user-programmable alarm conditions (upper and lower temperature thresholds). Self-monitoring operation is supported with an on-board real-time clock (RTC) to control sampling intervals and provide a time-stamp for alarm conditions.

A chip resistor

In April 2013, Vishay Precision Group launched an ultra-high-precision Z-Foil surface-mount current sensing chip resistor that it claims is the industry’s first such device to combine a high-power rating of 1 W at +70°C and low TCR of ±0.2 ppm/°C typical from -55°C to +125°C, +25°C ref. By dissipating up to 1 W in the 1625 package size, the VCS1625ZP allows designers to use a single device to measure larger currents than previously possible. For high-power applications, the device offers tight tolerances to ±0.2 per cent and a four-terminal Kelvin configuration for increased accuracy. The VCS1625ZP features a power coefficient (∆R due to self-heating) of 5 ppm at rated power, a thermal stabilisation time of <1 ns (nominal value achieved within 10 ppm of steady state value), and a wide resistance range from 0.3 Ω to 10 Ω.

A cable drop compensator

In April 2013, Linear Technology Corporation launched the LT6110 cable drop compensator, a new device that improves voltage regulation at remote loads without the need for Kelvin sense wires. The LT6110, a new component for the designer, has been architected for use with most types of voltage regulators and can provide several volts of load regulation compensation.

It operates with supply voltages that range from 2V to 50V, making it suitable for high power USB, power over Ethernet (PoE), remote instrumentation and remote industrial applications. The LT6110 reduces costs by eliminating sense wires, which may be prone to misconnection or damage, and it makes load regulation independent of wire size or length.

Hybrid MOS

In April 2013, ROHM launched a new high-voltage transistor design that significantly reduces power consumption in the power supplies and PFC circuits used in servers, industrial equipment, and home appliances. This new hybrid MOS combines the device structures of super-junction MOSFETs and IGBTs, leading to a breakthrough product that features the high-speed switching, low current characteristics of MOSFETs with the high-voltage resistance properties of IGBTs. The result is significant energy savings across the full current range. Device adoption requires clearing the rated value region. Wafer backside control assists during high temperature, large current operation. Performance equivalent to IGBTs is guaranteed, even when instantaneous large current flow is required.
