DC-DC converter

In March 2013, Emaar Impex Pvt Ltd introduced the LM1938, a step-up DC-DC converter specifically designed to drive white LEDs with a constant current. The device can drive up to 27 LEDs from a 5V supply. The LM1938 uses a constant frequency, current mode control scheme to provide excellent line and load regulation. At the start of each oscillator cycle, the RS latch sets itself and turns on the power switch Q1. A voltage proportional to the switch current is added to a stabilising ramp, and the resulting sum is fed into the positive terminal of the PWM comparator A2. When this voltage exceeds the level at the negative input of A2, the RS latch resets itself, turning off the power switch.

Low-dropout regulator

In April 2013, Linear Technology Corporation launched the LT3007, the latest member in a family of high voltage, micro power, robust PNP-based regulator, featuring an ultralow 3µA quiescent current. LT3007’s high input voltage capability, spanning 2.0V to 45V with an adjustable output voltage ranging from 0.6V to 44.5V, enables operation in a wide variety of application spaces. LT3007’s pin out is FMEA (failure mode effects analysis) compliant, which means the output stays at or below the regulation voltage during an adjacent pin short event, or if a pin is left floating.

The LT3007 delivers an output current of up to 20mA with a corresponding low dropout voltage of only 300mV.

Single and multi-channel isolated switches

In March 2013, Marsh Bellofram launched its ISO/ISL series of switches, providing a safe and reliable means of controlling energy loads from hazardous locations. Available in both single- and multi-channel models and offering up to four channels, the ISO/ISL series is designed to perform under both normal and abnormal conditions without releasing energy values that could lead to ignition of a flammable or combustible atmospheric mixture, even in its most easily ignited concentration.

The ISO/ISL series of switches feature a fully isolated output, which turns on when the control switch input from the hazardous location is closed. The multi-channel series is available with a choice of latching or non-latching output.

Aluminium electrolytic capacitors

In March 2013, TTI introduced two new ranges of aluminium electrolytic capacitors from Panasonic. The new FR Series of aluminium electrolytic capacitors is designed for applications that require ultra-low ESR, an extended product life, and are short of space. The FR Series has been developed using improved materials technology resulting in up to 30 per cent increased capacitance over Panasonic’s current comparable product, the FM Series.

Panasonic’s V-ZA Series is a conductive speciality hybrid capacitor, which combines the low ESR characteristics of speciality polymer capacitors and the advantage of low leakage current. Compact in design, the series also offers the high reliability advantage of speciality polymers and the safety of aluminium electrolytic capacitors.
