Government approves two electronics manufacturing clusters

electronicsThursday, August 28, 2014: Final decision has been taken on two electronic manufacturing clusters (EMCs) by the government and an in-principal approval has also been extended to eight others as part of efforts to boost domestic manufacturing in the electronics sector. Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said at a meeting that two EMCs have been recommended for an in-principal approval.

The government aims to make India self-sufficient in electronic manufacturing capacity and they are committed to make India as one of the best places to invest in electronics sector, Prasad told at a meeting of State IT ministers and Secretaries. He also said, “Department of Electronics and IT (DeitY) has accorded final approval to green field two EMCs and in-principal to seven greenfield EMCs and one common facility centre in brown field EMC.” The department has also made a recommendation of an in-principal approval for two EMCs in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Both the approved EMCs are located in Madhya Pradesh. Among the other EMCs, which are awaiting final decision, two are located in Telangana and one each in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Odisha and Rajasthan. 51 EMCs have been identified and notified by DeiTY for the Modified Special Package Scheme (M-SIPS). The Electronic System Design and Manufacturing ( ESDM) units under these notified clusters will also benefit from M-SIPS. Notification has also been done for seven EMCs each in Himachal Pradesh & Maharashtra, six each in Rajasthan and West Bengal, three each in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana , Kerala & Madhya Pradesh, 2 each in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh & Uttarakhand and one each in Puduchery, Punjab, Telengana and Tamil Nadu.
