Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia expects India’s wired Broadband market to outpace other global markets soon as the demand for more bandwidth is set to grow following the much-awaited entry of 4G telco Reliance Jio Infocomm.

Nokia’s take on India

Sam Bucci, head of optical networks for Nokia, told Economic Times that India is at the start of the cycle of building of fiberizing broadband for the purposes of delivering broadband to the home. Bucci further stated that Nokia observes a quickening pace and as a market the growth of residential broadband in India will probably outpace the other markets.

Soon after the announcement of Bharti Airtel and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) are doubling down on investments into their home broadband services ahead of Jio’s expected commercial entry into the market, the comment from Nokia comes in.

As per a recent ET report, Jio is widely expected to start by offering a mass-market wired-broadband product bundled with Internet-based television programming starting at about Rs 500 a month, almost half the current market rates for similar services, ET had earlier reported.

Nokia had last year bagged a 100G optical core deployment contract from Jio for their pan-India 4G LTE network, and a Gigabit Passive Optical Network or GPON technology deal for the telco’s FTTH network.

Besides its association with telcos such as Jio for the broadband service, Nokia is already working with a number of ISPs like Spectra and cable operators like Hathway and Den Networks. Bucci said that the need for more bandwidth has been fueled by rapidly evolving 4G LTE networks in India.
