The Ericsson BSNL MoU will require both the parties to work collectively on developing 5G. 5G enabled digitization revenue potential in India will be US $27.3 billion by 2026

Ericsson announced that it has signed an MoU with BSNL to work on developing a roadmap for IoT and 5G. The Ericsson BSNL MoU will require both the parties to work collectively on developing 5G use cases. BSNL and Ericsson will also share knowledge on 5G technology and collaborate on 3GPP standardisation processes.

The Sweden based telecom gear maker has also signed a similar agreement with Bharti Airtel in the past.

An Ericsson report had earlier claimed that 5G enabled digitization revenue potential in India will be US $27.3 billion by 2026. It said that the Indian operators can generate additional revenue of US$ 13 Billion or half of the stated potential if they take up roles beyond being Connectivity and infrastructure providers to become service enablers and service creators.

Biggest 5G opportunities

If Ericsson reports are to be believed than the biggest opportunities will include sectors like manufacturing, energy and utilities followed by public safety and health sectors.

Some 5G use cases that could be implemented using the unique features of 5G technology include industrial control and automation, autonomous driving, safety and traffic efficiency services, hospital applications and medical data management amongst others.

Borje Ekholm, president and CEO, Ericsson during the launch of Innovation Lab for 5G at the IIT, Delhi had said: “Ericsson is leading 5G standardization globally. The 5G Center of Excellence and Innovation Lab aims to stimulate the 5G ecosystem in India. We would like to unleash the creativity and innovation of the Indian industry, academia and entrepreneurs to fully leverage and make 5G a reality in India.”

Ericsson has already conducted 5G over air

The telecom gear maker had earlier claimed that it has conducted India’s first 5G over the air beam tracking demonstration on 3.5GHz spectrum using a pre-commercial end-to-end system including 5G-NR, VRAN and VCORE.

The published results included spectral efficiency enhancement and gains for capacity, cell edge throughput and mean user throughput.

Touted 100 times faster than LTE and 10 times faster than 4G, the 5G internet technology is being considered as the next big thing in the world. And with network providers like BSNL and Bharti Airtel signing MoUs for 5G development with companies like Ericsson, the focus is clearly on perfect implementation and harnessing of the 5G technology.
