T&M: The latest in power supplies

Friday, January 04, 2013: Having a trusted power supply can drastically reduce concerns related to test and measurement. Modern day high performance supplies have replaced the old, large and heavy power supplies that comprised an analogue or a digital display with only three digits of resolution. Today’s advanced power supplies have built-in high accuracy measurement digitisers for capturing voltage and current, in parallel with measurement resolutions. This beats the measurement methods of the past. Hence, the user no longer has to deal with the complexity of setting up a measurement shunt with a digital multimeter or external digitiser. Modern power supplies have high speed output control loops for dealing with sudden output transients. To meet these unique power challenges, test and measurement vendors have now developed advanced application specific supplies.

Model: PSW 160V, Brand: GW Instek
Manufacturer: Good Will Instrument Co, Taiwan

In November 2012, Good Will Instrument Co launched its PSW series of programmable switching DC power supplies. It has launched nine models with the combination of 30 V, 80 V and 160 V rated voltages, with three output power capacities of 360 W, 720 W and 1080 W. Its multi-range feature allows flexible and efficient configuration of voltage and current within the rated power range. The PSW series can be connected in series for a maximum of two units or in a parallel voltage curve for a maximum of three units, to provide a higher capacity.

Model: 2230-30-1, Brand: Keithley
Manufacturer: Keithley Instruments Inc, USA

In October 2012, Keithley (a Tektronix company) added dual and triple output versions to its 2200 family of precision power supplies. Being isolated (to 240 V), the outputs can be combined to reach 60 V or 3 A—with a special display mode showing total voltage or current —and each channel can be turned on or off independently; so the supplies can be used with circuits that need timed power sequences. Bipolar voltages (+/-30 V, for example) can be supplied, and tracking mode allows the outputs to maintain a user defined ratio. A programmable timer allows tests to run unattended, turning off the outputs after a specified interval. Remote sensing is possible, via rear panel connectors, and ripple is said to be lower than 3 mVp-p—these are all linear PSUs to keep noise low. Features provided to protect fragile or experimental loads from damage during testing include programmable voltage maximums to prevent the outputs accidentally being set too high. And all front panel controls can be locked using a user definable password to prevent changes during critical tests.

Key features
0.03 per cent basic voltage and 0.1 per cent basic current read back accuracy are claimed; •Two individually isolated 30 V 1.5A output channels, typically used for powering analogue circuits, plus a 6 V 5 A output, typically for powering digital circuits; •Voltage setting and reading resolution is 1 mV; •Current setting and reading resolution is 1 mA; •For automated testing, the TMC-compliant USB port allows control from a variety of programming environments; •For repeat tests, instrument settings can be saved to one of 30 internal memory locations, and a numeric keypad offers an alternative to the knob for entering output values

Model: 1747, Brand: BK Precision
Manufacturer: B&K Precision Corp, USA

In August 2012, B&K Precision announced the addition of its Model 1747 dual range DC power source. Delivering up to 350 W of power with constant voltage (CV) and in constant current (CC) modes, Model 1747 can output either higher voltage at a lower current range (0-60 V, 5 A), or higher current at a lower voltage range (0-35 V, 10 A). This new DC power supply is suitable for a wide variety of uses in electronics manufacturing, service and repair, and in engineering labs. The design of dual range power supplies gives users operational flexibility within voltage and current ranges, depending on their application needs. This helps save both bench space and cost by eliminating the need for multiple power supplies on the bench or the purchase of more power than necessary.

Key features
It offers a sufficient increase in current range, yet maintains excellent regulation and low ripple characteristics; •Both voltage and current are adjustable with coarse and fine control knobs, while two bright 4-digit LED displays show the voltage and current; •Automatic recall of the supply’s last settings on power up, overload and reverse polarity protection are possible, and there is an addition of a convenient output on/off button; •An RS-232 interface on the rear enables the remote control of the instrument via PC, using software or remote commands.
