In 2014, Standex-Meder Electronics announced the release of its MK15-501 magnetically operated reed proximity sensor for surface mount devices (SMD). It is ideal for position detection in surface mounted PCB assemblies, to meter anti-tampering sensors and lid detectors in household appliances, as well as for heating, ventilation and air conditioning devices due to its simple internal structure. It is available in two lead designs: straight leads for cutting and PCB slot mounting, and bent SMD gull wing leads used when the wire coming from a chip bends horizontally to make contact with a solder pad on a substrate. Being only 16×2.8×2.8mm in size, the MK15 501 is excellent for low power operations, requiring no external power for sensor operation. It is especially useful for magnetic systems requiring long operating distances with permanent magnets. Available in four operating sensitivities, it can also be used for high power switches.
