TI intros AFEs for T&M, wireless and optical networking

Thursday, December 06, 2012: Texas Instruments has introduced two analog front ends (AFEs), the AFE7071 and AFE7071, for test and measurement, wireless communication and optical networking equipment. The AFE7071 is a complete radio transmitter, which integrates a dual digital-to-analog converter, tunable baseband filter and digtal quadrature modulation correction circuit. This enables it to reduce 80 percent board space compared to discrete board components. The AFE7070 adds a direct digital synthesizer (DDS) with 32-bit numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) and LVDS output buffer.

The AFE7071 provides a dual 14-bit, 65-MSPS DAC, programmable low-pass filter and RF IQ modulator with an RF output range of 100 MHz to 2700 MHz in a single device. In addition, it is tunable from 100 MHz to 2700 MHz with output power up to 0.3 dBm to accommodate a wide range of frequencies and maximize system flexibility. The AFE7070 consists of an integrated LVDS output, which can be used in a clock phase-locked loop to drive the pre-scaler. This eliminates the need for a separate analog to LVDS converter.

TI is providing an evaluation module for both the analog front ends. The AFE7070EVM and AFE7071EVM include the CDCM7005 clock jitter cleaner, as well as TI power management devices, such as DC/DC converters and low-noise LDOs, to provide a complete bits-to-RF prototyping and reference design. Additionally, designers can use the TSW3065EVM as a flexible local oscillator to drive the AFE7070 and AFE7071. It includes the TRF3765, a PLL/VCO with a tunable range of 300 MHz to 4800 MHz.
