TERI SAS & IPCA Inaugurates Centre for Waste Management & Research

Indian Pollution Control Association (IPCA) and TERI School of Advanced Studies (TERI SAS) jointly launched the IPCA Centre for Waste Management and Research (ICWMR) on Tuesday. The newly established centre will work as a think tank in the field of waste management, environment and sustainable development. The partners believe that it will be instrumental in undertaking evidence-based research, developing technology, bringing innovations, conducting capacity-building programmes, and developing a sustainable supply chain of waste.

“It will publish insights by eliciting inputs through organizing working group sessions, and conferences and collaborating with similar national and international institutes. It will also enrol research scholars for their PhD Degrees”, stated the official communication.

Inauguration

The centre was inaugurated at TERI SAS in Delhi by Dr Prashant Gargava, Member Secretary, Central Pollution Control Board, Govt. of India. He remarked: “Development of ICWMR is imperative in such times when there are huge data gaps in waste management and this centre shall focus on generating reliable datasets for innovation & research in the field of solid waste management sector for developing subsequent policies and will also play an instrumental role in providing robust solutions to challenging issues to environmental sustainability. This centre is expected to augment the goals and objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan of Govt. of India.”

Prof. Prateek Sharma, Vice Chancellor, TERI SAS stated, “This centre is an amalgamation of decadal experiences of academicians and policy executioners and aims to cover all matrices of environmental sustainability with special focus on solid waste management related fundamental & advanced research.”

Founder-Director of IPCA, Mr Ashish Jain added, “Solid waste management has huge potential and should be considered as an upcoming industry for employment, resource recovery, and circular economy. But this would be possible with the professional approach towards the sector and this centre will work to build more professionals and skilled manpower to make solid waste management the most reputed sector among all industries.”

As per the reports, many representatives of government, multilateral organizations, corporates, and academia attended the inaugural ceremony and congratulated IPCA and TERI SAS on the initiative. Moreover, Dr Sumit Sharma, Programme Officer, United Nations Environment Programme talked about the potential of this centre in reinforcing policy formulation. Dr Sameer Prasad, Associate Professor of Operations Management College of Business, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs also shared his thoughts about the role of action research in the solid waste management sector.

IPCA is an NGO working in the field of waste management for over two decades. It works with a diverse set of stakeholders like community, institutions, corporates and government, and executes projects on solid waste management, air quality monitoring, environmental education and upliftment of the informal sector players like waste pickers and rag-pickers.

TERI SAS is a Deemed to be University that aspires to contribute globally by serving society as a centre of advanced studies and to promote learning through teaching and through the creation of new knowledge. The University commits itself to academic excellence and an environment which would encourage personal and intellectual growth.
