Saturday, September 27, 2014: Five solar power projects for Chennai Silks Group, powered by Tata Power Solar, have been successfully completed, as announced by the company. There was already a 2MW solar power plant for Chennai Silks and now these solar projects, totaling 5.2MW, will join the league. The 2MW solar plant was commissioned by Tata last year.
The 2MW solar project brought the solar generation capacity to 7.2MW. The new five projects are located in Kangeyam of Tirupur district in Tamil Nadu and they were completed in just 12 weeks. Different group companies of Chennai Silks will be covered by these projects. 1MW projects have been set up for Naachas Wind Energy, Space Textiles and KTM Jewellery while 1.1MW installations have been done for SCM International Impex and Sathy Silks.
Power-cuts and complete blackouts are nothing new in Tamil Nadu and manufacturers reply on diesel generators mainly. Now clean energy will be fully utilised with the new solar arrays in the state. Chennai Silks Group’s managing director N K Nandhagopal said, solar power use in retail showrooms have been cost-effective for them as well as enabling reduction in carbon emissions. Local jobs were also generated by the projects and Tata Power Solar is trying to maintain this local employment trend so that the plants are smoothly operated and maintained.
