  • The Nexon EV facelift could potentially be launched by the end of 2023
  • Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) aim to make more than 50% of their cars electric by 2030

Tata Motors is preparing to launch four new electric SUVs in the upcoming year. Firstly, the updated Nexon EV is expected to be released this September. Following that, the Punch EV, Harrier EV, and Curvv EV are set to debut in early 2024. Currently, the Nexon is available in Petrol, Diesel, and EV versions, Punch is available in Petrol and CNG variants, Harrier is exclusively available in a Diesel version, while Curvv is yet to be launched.

The electric vehicle industry in India is dominated by Tata Motors in the four-wheeler passenger vehicle segment. They are already selling electric cars such as the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, and the Nexon EV.

Chairman of Tata Sons, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, stated in his address to shareholders at the 78th AGM that by 2030, half of Tata’s cars and most of Jaguar Land Rover’s vehicles will be powered by green technology. The companies are making substantial investments, with over US$2 billion allocated for Tata Motors Passenger Electric Mobility and an additional 15 billion pounds earmarked for Jaguar Land Rover.

Their primary focus is on electric cars, distinguishing them from hybrids like those produced by Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. They are diligently working on the development of electric cars, large trucks, and even hydrogen-powered trucks. According to Chandrasekaran, their aim is for electric vehicles to comprise around 50% of the total cars on the road by the end of this decade. Nevertheless, conventional gasoline, diesel, and CNG-powered vehicles will continue to be present

The Nexon and Punch EV, are the first kind (Gen1). They used to be regular cars with engines, but now they’re turning into electric cars. The Harrier is a bit different. It’s the second kind (Gen2) and its development will be more EV focused. Then there is the Gen3 cars, like the Avinya, which is a special kind of car that’s made from scratch to be an electric car. Its outside design was shown earlier this year.

Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are working together to make even more electric cars. JLR’s objective is to have 65% of their vehicles powered by electricity. Additionally, pre-orders for the upcoming Range Rover and Range Rover Sport EVs will commence in October, with deliveries expected to begin by 2025.
