Tata Motors Enters EV Space With Nexon EV

Tata Motors has entered the personal electric mobility segment by launching the Nexon EV. The electric car will be powered by the in-house developed Ziptron technology. This technology is a modular electric powertrain platform consisting of permanent magnet AC motor and a dust and water proof, liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery system. The company will be selling the EV at an introductory price of Rs 13.99 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Nexon EV is powered by a 129 PS permanent magnet AC motor. The motor is backed by a 30.2 kWh lithium ion battery. According to Tata Motors, the electric motor can produce 245 Nm of instant torque from standstill. It also claimed that the car comes with acceleration of 0-100 in 9.9 seconds.

Tata Sons group chairman, N Chandrasekaran said, “E-Mobility is an irreversible mega-trend and an imperative for addressing pollution and generating job opportunities in India. Through Tata uniEVerse, our Group companies have synchronized their efforts to develop a holistic e-mobility ecosystem to accelerate the adoption of EVs in India. I am delighted that this ecosystem has come together with the launch of Tata Nexon EV, a path-breaking electric SUV that can match the aspirations of mainstream Indian customers.”

Tata Motors will make the EV available in three variants of XZ+ LUX, XZ+, and XM. It has priced the top -end variant at Rs 15.99 lakh. In terms of charging, the company said that the Nexon EV’s battery charged up to 80 per cent within 60 minutes when plugged into a fast DC charger. It can also be charged using a regular 15-ampere socket which will require more charging time.

This high performance, connected vehicle is uniquely suited to address the aspirations of Indian customers, and making EVs mainstream. We are confident that this game changing product will further reinforce our commitment towards developing sustainable and responsible mobility solutions for India.”

60 dealer outlets in 22 cities

The company aims to retail the EV through 60 dealer outlets in 22 cities. Tata Power will be setting up EV charging network throughout the country. Tata Chemicals is working on battery chemistry whileTata AutoComp is working on battery packs and other components.
