EV infrastructure developer SUN Mobility has signed a deal with IndianOil to set up battery-swapping facilities in Indian cities.

SUN Mobility, a provider of energy infrastructure and services for electric vehicles (EVs), announced a partnership with IndianOil on Wednesday. Their aim is to implement an extensive battery-swapping infrastructure network by 2030.

The joint venture plans to expand to more than 10,000 battery swapping stations across 40+ cities within the next three years. This initiative will facilitate the seamless adoption of electric mobility for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and small four-wheelers by offering a “Battery as a Service” (BaaS) mobility solution.

According to the company’s official statement, this solution can reduce worries about battery cost, maintenance, replacement, and charging time.

As per the announcement, this collaboration merges IndianOil’s vast network of over 37,000 fuel stations nationwide with SUN Mobility’s battery swapping technology. This will make electric vehicle usage as convenient as traditional fuel stations. However, no financial transaction has been disclosed by any of the parties.

Chetan Maini, Co-Founder & Chairman of SUN Mobility, highlighted the company’s founding mission to enhance electric vehicle affordability and address range and charging issues. He said, “Today, on World Environment Day, it gives me great pride to announce that together, we aim to transform mobility in India and create a benchmark for the world to follow.”

SUN Mobility currently serves over 25,000 electric vehicles in 20 urban areas throughout India. Over 630 stations and 50,000+ batteries enable more than a million swaps monthly, serving a diverse range of customers with two and three-wheel vehicles. Since its establishment in 2017, the company has focused on developing an open architecture platform for EV battery swapping and expanding globally through partnerships with other energy providers.

Government corporation IndianOil is also entering the renewable energy sector. With an extensive workforce, infrastructure, and R&D team, IndianOil caters to Indian customers as well as those overseas, like Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and the UAE.
