The commissioning of the two solar projects is in line with SDMC’s commitment to cut down its consumption of thermal power

In order to reduce the utilisation of thermal power and to save energy cost, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has signed a memorandum of association (MoU) with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for developing two grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) projects totalling 27.5 MW.

According to the MoU, two separate solar plants will be set up – one at Ghuman Hera near Najafgarh in New Delhi and another one in Ferozepur, Faridabad at a piece of land owned by SDMC. For the installation of these solar PV projects, the corporation has decided to use the vacant land.

Estimated capacity

“Around 105 acres of land at Ghuman Hera 9.5 acres of land at Ferozpur has been made available for setting up the solar projects. After a detailed study, solar projects of estimated capacity 25 MW and 2.5 MW have been planned at Ghuman Hera and Ferozpur respectively. These are expected to be commissioned in 18 months after the work begins,” PTI quoted South Delhi Mayor Narender Chawla as saying.

The mayor further said that the projected cost of the project at Ghuman Hera would be Rs 145 crore (US$ 20.7 million) while the cost of project at Ferozpur would be Rs 20 crore (US$ 2.8 million).

These projects will be funded through public bonds and for this, the process has already been started, he added.

Shikha Rai, Chairperson – Standing Committee of SDMC, said that the corporation will be able to save Rs 22.5 crore (US$ 3.2 million) every year from Ghuman Hera project and earn Rs 1.55 crore (US$ 0.22 million) by supplying the energy generated from the Ferozepur project.

The commissioning of these two solar projects is in line with the corporation’s commitment to cut down its consumption of thermal power, earn huge savings and conserve environment and natural resources, Rai said.
