solar 1January 17, 2015: Punj Lloyd has set up 200KW SPV grid interactive multi rooftop single point integration power plant in Chandigarh’s Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) Complex. The plant was inaugurated by Chandigarh Renewable Energy Science and Technology Promotional Society (CREST).

With this Punj Lloyd’s cumulative installed capacity now stands at over 1.2MW in Chandigarh.

Punj Lloyd has earlier set up two SPV interactive multi-rooftop single point integration power plants each capacity of 495KW and 435KW, placed at Government Colleges of Girls and Boys.

The capital city of Punjab and Haryana, has been identified as the Model Solar City by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in its Solar City Programme.

Along with contributing to government’s solar mission by creating solar cities and rooftop projects, Punj Lloyd Delta Renewables plans to play an instrumental role in government’s target of 100GW energy by 2022.

Punj Lloyd’s SPV power plants are designed to meet the load requirements of the buildings during day time and will feed power to the utility grid or DISCOM if surplus power is available.

A plant on average at the IRB complex generates 25MW of energy, reducing 60 tonnes CO2 emission in last five months.

At the inauguration, His Excellency, Shivraj Patil, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh, stated that in a country like India where sunlight is abundant, efforts must be made to fully utilise this free source of energy. With improving technology and resulting increase in the efficiency of the solar modules, he expressed confidence of higher yields.

In essence, the Solar City programme strives to integrate energy conservation measures to reduce the energy, demand, and utilisation of locally available resources such as solar energy to meet these reduced energy demands.

India’s first initiative towards solar city was undertaken by the Government of Gujarat, which decided to make its capital city, Gandhinagar as a Solar City. A Master Plan for the same was prepared by TERI in 2007. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India recently announced a program for development of solar cities. A total of 60 cities or towns are proposed to develop as solar city during the 11th five year plan period of MNRE.
