  • Centre approved the EMC in Maharashtra, which will attract investment of around Rs. 2000 Cr
  • It aims to strengthen the overall electronics manufacturing ecosystem in India, says the Govt
  • The minister stated that the centre is working with the Maharashtra Govt to catalyse the electronics manufacturing sector in the state.

The Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar recently made the announcement of approving the greenfield Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) in the state of Maharashtra. With the project cost of Rs 492.85 crores, the cluster will come up at Ranjangaon Phase III, near Pune. As per the estimates drawn by the Govt, this will attract Rs. 2000 Crore investment and generate 5000 job opportunities.

EMCs in India

The approval for the EMC was given to Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and its State Industrial Agency. During the event, Shri Chandrasekhar said, “We already have EMCs in Noida, Tirupati, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu – wherein both multi-national companies and Indian startups have set up their units. The Government of India is the enabling partner in these EMCs and it is working in tandem with the state governments to make these EMCs a catalyst for the electronics manufacturing in the state.”

It is noteworthy that the city of Tirupati has a similar EMC, and it now has India’s first Lithium Cell manufacturing plant as well. The Minister pointed out that these EMCs will prove to be the pivot points around which the electronics manufacturing and design ecosystem shall flourish in the years to come – taking India towards its target of US $300 bn of electronics manufacturing by 2025-26.

Shri Chandrasekhar said that electronics manufacturing in India has increased to six lakh crores from one lakh crores in 2014. “While 92% of all mobile phones used by Indian customers were imported in 2014, now 97% of all mobile phones used by Indian customers were domestically manufactured. We had zero exports in the electronics manufacturing space in 2014, at present we export equipment worth 70,000 crores,” he explained.

Semicon India Future Design Programme

The Minister also stated that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeiTY) plans to give a boost to the Rs. 1000 Cr Semicon India Future Design programme and hold a roadshow at Pune soon to support the semiconductor design startups in the state. He added that C-DAC, Pune shall be the nodal office for this purpose. It must be noted that the first such roadshow in the country was launched in Gujarat last month.
