odishaWednesday, May 21, 2014: Taking a step ahead to promote electronics manufacturing in the state, the Odisha government has given a go ahead to the electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) road map prepared by India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA). According to a Business Standard report, Satyabrata Ray, deputy secretary of the IT department wrote to general manager, Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC), the technical directorate of IT department, “The government have been pleased to approve the ESDM road map submitted by IESA.”

The government officials stated that process of implementation of the recommendations of the report will initiate soon. IESA estimates that the ESDM sector can generate a cumulative revenue of Rs 188,000 million in the state by 2024. Along with the revenue, IESA has also thrown light on the potential investment and employment opportunities in the ESDM sector of Odisha. According to IESA, the state needs to pump in the investment of Rs 73,400 million in ESDM sector in three phases to attain the projected revenue. Phase 1 of the plan, scheduled between 2016-18, can begin with the system integration and assembly of low complexity products and components.

Phase-2, scheduled in 2019-21, can take the manufacturing activities to another level with CKD (completely knocked down) assembly, component production and manufacturing of products with medium to high complexity. While in Phase 3 (2022-24), the state can emphasise on products that are complex or require a mature ecosystem, and require good talent availability and large investment, stated the Business Standard report.

IESA has estimated that with these initiatives, the state can generate about 60,000 jobs in a span of 10 years. It has also suggested renaming of Department of IT as Department of Electronics & IT, similar to that of Government of India’s Department of Information Technology to Department of Electronics & IT (DeitY).

IESA has also identified potential areas for ESDM development in the state. The districts of Rayagada, Sundergarh, Balasore and Ganjam districts are identified as the potential areas for setting up of ESDM projects after a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities and threat) analysis.
