According to a report by OpenGov Asia, Malaysian experts have said that the country is ready to deploy the fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology.The report also said that the director of a telecommunication-based think-tank stated that Malaysia should make use of the initial use case successes to be the leader in 5G deployment as countries like Singapore and South Korea are also approaching fast.
As per the report, at present there are 55 use cases under the demonstration phase across 32 sites in six states involving nine verticals for a six-month period from first Oct 2019 till 31 March 2020. The total investment of the 5G demonstration projects funded by the industry players is Malaysian ringgit (RM) 116 million.
5G task force set up
In the 2020 Budget, the government had introduced a 5G Ecosystem Development grant of RM50 million to promote technological innovation in the country. According to an earlier report by OpenGov Asia, the country’s Deputy Foreign Minister had said that Malaysia is presently working to fully adopt 5G technology by 2023. The report said that in 2018, the government established the 5G Task Force.
