The electronics manufacturing scenario in the country is currently perhaps going through its best phase and we are witnessing not only global players announcing their plans to manufacture in India but also a lot of local companies diversifying into this domain. This provides great opportunities for the surface mount technology (SMT) equipment manufacturers and distributors.
India has witnessed a six-fold jump in proposed investments in local electronics manufacturing, and global firms such as Samsung, LG, Foxconn and many other mobile manufacturing companies have started setting up their factories in the country.
The government has received 156 proposals with investment commitments worth US$ 16.8 billion in the last 20 months, say sources from the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA), the agency that is aggressively promoting local manufacture of computer hardware and electronic items.

It should be noted that many state governments are also encouraging electronics manufacturing and this can be seen by recent developments in Karnataka. The state government has cleared roughly half a dozen investment proposals worth ₹ 30 billion in total, including a project of chip-maker Intel, ahead of a high-profile investor summit held in Bengaluru in February.
All these initiatives provide immense opportunities for the SMT industry.
In this issue, we have profiled (alphabetically) some of the leading SMT distributors in the country.
