Kerala Govt Partners with Olectra-BYD for Electric Buses

Olectra-BYD, a joint initiative of Hyderabad-based EV manufacturer and China-based EV company, is planning to expand in India with its eBuzz K series

The government of Kerala has partnered with Olectra-BYD, a firm dealing with electric public transport system to run electric buses for public transport. The company’s eBuzz K7 model buses, which are already plying in the Kullu-Manali-Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh, will run in the state to carry pilgrims to Sabarimala temple.

The company will supply around 10 electric buses in the state. N Naga Satyam, executive director, Olectra-BYD, says that the buses are durable to run on all kinds of terrains.

Olectra-BYD

Olectra-BYD is a joint initiative of Olectra Greentech (previously called Goldman), Hyderabad-based electric vehicle manufacturer and BYD Auto Industry of China, the world’s largest electric vehicle company. It is India’s largest manufacturer of composite insulators for power transmission and distribution network which forayed into the electric vehicles segment in 2015. Satyam says that Olectra’s buses have successfully completed over 4,00,000 km on Indian roads and have cut down carbon emissions up to 419 tonnes. The company was the first one to bring out an e-bus under the Make in India initiative.

eBuzz K7 model

Its eBuzz K7 model buses run on lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery that can get fully charged between 2-3 hours and cover up to 250 kilometres in a single charge. It has a regenerative braking system enabling recovery of the kinetic energy lost in braking. Olectra has equipped the buses with an electronically-controlled air suspension to ensure a comfortable travel. The company has brought out this model ensuring a safe ride to the passengers by offering short circuit protection and over temperature function and lightening.

The EV maker is currently looking at its expansion in Karnataka, Delhi, Chandigarh, Goa and Gujarat with another model called eBuzz K9. The new model has been tested in Bengaluru, Delhi, Chandigarh, Goa, and Rajkot and will soon run across the 5 states.

India has been promoting electric vehicles and has planned a 5,500 crores investment for full transformation of fuel-enabled mobility to electric mobility.
