Intel Divides Graphics Chip Unit into Two

Intel appointed Raj Koduri, who led the graphics chips unit, as the chief architect.

Intel Corp announced on Wednesday that it would split its graphic chips unit into two as it aims to realign its business to compete with Nvidia Corp and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Raja Koduri, who led the graphic chips unit, will return to his role as chief architect and oversee the company’s long-term technology and chip design strategy.

The Santa Clara, California-based company will combine its consumer graphics unit with the client computing group, which makes chips for personal computers (PCs). Meanwhile, the accelerated computing teams will be merged with the data centre and artificial intelligence (AI) business.

“Discrete graphics and accelerated computing are critical growth engines for Intel,” the company said in the statement. “We are evolving our structure to accelerate and scale their impact and drive go-to-market strategies with a unified voice to customers.”

Koduri has led graphics technology ventures at iPhone maker Apple and AMD. He joined Intel in 2017. Prior to this announcement, he had been heading the accelerated computing systems and graphics unit. The company said that he would be working in cooperation with Intel’s design teams. Those who reported to him would be moved to either Intel’s PC or server chip business units.

It is the world’s largest semiconductor chip manufacturer by revenue and is one of the developers of the x86 series of instruction sets which is found in most personal computers. The company’s segments include Client Computing Group (CCG), Data Centre Group (DCG), Internet of Things Group (IOTG), Mobileye, Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group (NSG) and Programmable Solutions Group (PSG).
