In the third quarter, professional services, telecommunications, manufacturing, banking and government industries contributed around to 82 per cent of the overall external storage market in the country.

Commenting on the data, Dileep Nadimpalli, Research Manager, Enterprise Infrastructure, IDC India, said, “Infrastructure modernisation to improve agility and scalability is of high importance for today’s organisations. This trend is compelling organisations to deploy and consider new age storage solutions.”

In the given quarter, organisational demand for low latency and high-performance storage solutions led to a three-digit growth in all-flash arrays (AFA). Most of the vendors started providing non-volatile memory express (NVMe)-based AFAs to push an incremental growth in coming quarters.

Growth in midrange segment

Midrange segment of external storage witnessed immense growth in the said quarter and continued to lead the market accounting for more than 66.9 per cent of the entire external storage market. However, entry-level as well as high-end storage segments saw a decline in the third quarter.

Ranganath Sadasiva, Director, Enterprise Solutions, IDC India, said, “The storage scene in India is seeing growth and leading the Information Transformation. Majority of the OEMs are focusing on new technologies and innovative pricing models to ensure traditional external storage consumption in the market in the wake of increasing acceptance of cloud storage solutions across organisations.”

In the third quarter of 2018, Dell Inc continued to be the leader of the market, capturing 30.3 per cent share of vendor revenue, followed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) having 18 per cent market share in external storage market. Smaller external storage OEMs saw a significant growth in the given period on the back of huge multi-million-dollar contracts from professional services organisations.
