The policy on electric vehicles (EVs) charging infrastructure will also allow individuals to establish charging stations for commercial use

India would soon have a policy on electric vehicles (EVs) charging infrastructure that will allow individuals to establish charging stations for commercial purposes in order to push e-mobility in the country, said R K Singh, Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy.

Power Ministry has circulated the policy on EV charging among other concerned department and ministries for their comments and feedback. The policy also mentions that every individual is free to establish EV charging station,” Singh said while speaking at the International Symposium to Promote Innovation & Research in Energy Efficiency (Inspire), jointly organised by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and World Bank.

No need for licence

Replying to reporters’ question on the use of charging facility by individuals for commercial basis, he said, “Everybody is free to set up charging station. There is no need to get a licence.”

India need infrastructure for EV charging to boost electronic vehicles. The country aims to have considerable share of EVs on road by 2030, which is also in sync with the Government’s commitment to cut emissions by a third from 2005 level.

Singh also informed about the postponement of 1,200 megawatt (MW) hybrid auction (solar and wind) and said that the tariff ceiling has been raised to Rs 2.70/unit.

The ministry is extending the auction because the ceiling price has been increased, he added.

The auction is postponed till November 14, which was earlier scheduled for October 26. According to the tender, the successful bidder will establish combined hybrid wind and solar capacities of 1,200 MW. In the meantime, the deadline for submitting the bid for 10 GW solar energy auction has also get an extension till November 19.

Promoting clean energy

It is crucial for the government to promote clean energy as it has set up a target of 175 GW of clean energy by 2022, including 60 GW of wind energy and 100 GW of solar energy.

Singh also mentioned that Power Ministry is also working to partner with the oil ministry for setting up of EV charging stations at petrol pumps across the country.
