In a recent report, PTI has stated that to promote design, testing and manufacturing of telecom equipment, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has proposed a funding amounf of Rs 10-billion. Trai also suggested that India should aim for net zero imports of telecom equipment by 2022.
Though telecom services in India has increased by leaps and bound, telecom equipment manufacturing still lags behind. Hence to boost up local manufacturing the aim should be to shift from being an import dependent country to a global hub of domestic manufacturing.
In a statement Trai has said that in order to make India an indigenous manufacturing hub, Telecom Equipment Manufacturing Council (TEMC), should identify and recommend specific areas of priorities.
As part of the recommendation to overcome the existing scenario, Trai has recommended that the progress of indigenous telecommunication equipment manufacturing in the country be monitored in the Telecom Department at least at the level of Member, Telecom Commission.
Additionally, it also said that within the telecom department, dedicated unit should be made responsible for facilitation of telecom equipment manufacturing related activities and also preference should be given to indigenous products in all public telecom network for security reasons.
