Gruner Bags 11 CBG Plants Order From Reliance

The Noida-based CBG plant manufacturer is set to build a large facility in Gujarat in association with Reliance Industries, expects a vast turnover with more orders to come.

Gruner Renewable Energy, a domestic producer of compressed biogas generating plants for other enterprises, has recently bagged an order of Rs 1500 crore (nearly $180M) from Reliance Industries. It will supply 11 of the first 50 CBG plants that Reliance tendered for and expects to get more in the coming months with the second batch of orders.

The company expects that the Reliance orders will propel them to Rs 4000 crore (nearly $480M) in the next fiscal year. It will be a substantial leap from Rs 100 crore ($11M), where the figure stands now.

Gruner disclosed that it is set to deliver its first of the 11 CBG plants to Reliance’s Navsari facility. The plant near Surat, Gujarat, costing Rs 220 crore, has been claimed to be the largest in Asia, according to the official statement. It is capable of producing 44 tons of biogas daily (16,000 tons annually) from biomass sources like paddy straw, press mud, cane trash, and municipal solid waste.

Through the infrastructure, Reliance will mix the CBG with the compressed natural gas it distributes to vehicles through its outlets.

The company’s founder and CEO, Utkarsh Gupta, sees the opening of the Navsari plant as a step towards achieving India’s sustainable energy goals. He is hopeful that the establishment and functioning of CBG plants will significantly decrease the country’s crude oil import bill.

Gupta also told the Hindu businessline that Gruner is close to the final stages of securing an agreement with a major government-owned company. The agreement is to establish a joint venture aiming at building CBG plants. Under the arrangement, Gruner would hold a majority stake of 51 per cent.

Gruner, founded in February 2023 and headquartered in Noida, manufactures CBG plants using BioEnergy’s German technology. To meet increasing market demand, the company is exploring the production of biomass briquetting and pelleting plants. The CEO has also mentioned plans to expand into biogas purification machinery through a special-purpose vehicle.
