The new X2D Multiband’s ability to operate on multiple frequencies makes it ideal for use in critical operations, says the company

US-based drone manufacturer and leading global player in the autonomous flight domain, Skydio recently announced that it now offers the Skydio X2 with new multiband technology and capabilities – the Skydio X2D Multiband. It was developed in collaboration with Skydio’s domestic and international defence customers to enhance performance and versatility across various communication systems. Calling it ruggedized, foldable, and compliant with the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the company mentioned that it utilizes different frequency bands to overcome limitations such as interference, attenuation, or bandwidth constraints in a single frequency band.

The company said that the new X2D Multiband’s ability to operate on multiple frequencies makes it ideal for use in critical operations in contested environments for government aerial intelligence, reconnaissance and situational awareness, emergency services, and search and rescue operations.

The X2D is equipped with a dual-sensor payload that includes a colour camera and a FLIR® thermal sensor. Underlining some additional X2D highlights, the company said that it offers an optional add-on of Skydio 3D Scan to automate the data capture process to generate 3D models. It has wireless range and frequencies up to 6.2 mi/10km and an average flight of 35 minutes. Notably, it provides AES-256 wireless encryption for cybersecurity.

As per the press release, the US-made Skydio X2D is powered by Skydio Autonomy Enterprise, an AI-driven autonomous flight engine that enables unparalleled 360° obstacle avoidance, autonomous tracking, GPS-denied navigation, and complete workflow automation. Interestingly, it is designed to exceed the Short-Range Reconnaissance (SRR) requirements for the US Army.

Chief of Staff, Product Management at Skydio, Mike Ross remarked, “The new Skydio X2D Multiband enables compliance with frequency and spectrum management requirements, in multiple countries, providing operational flexibility within different regulatory frameworks and across a wide range of operational frequencies. The ability to toggle between frequencies allows for secure communication without interference.”

2014-born Skydio is the leading U.S. drone manufacturer and specializes in autonomous flight. The company claims to leverage breakthrough AI to create intelligent flying machines for use by consumers, enterprises, and government customers.
