Wednesday, November 26, 2014: The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has jotted down a plan for installing solar panels at the multi-level parking being constructed in Sector 17. The project will commence after the civil body will send the details to the Chandigarh Renewable Energy Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) for the installation of the project.

Also, since the science and technology wing of the Chandigarh Administration is already working on the solar panels in the government buildings, the department has chosen both the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in sectors 17 and 43, over two dozen government schools, Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) premises and few other buildings to install solar panels. The project will commence earliest by the next month.

Santosh Kumar, director, science and technology wing of UT said, “Though we have been covering all government establishments to make them solar equipped, we have decided to fix solar panels at both bus stands and government schools. We have already installed solar panels at IRB Sarangpur, but an additional 300KW solar panel has also been planned at the premises. There are around 120 government schools, out of which we have covered about two dozen, and the process to cover more schools is continuing.”

As per the records, the department has already installed a 150KW solar panel at the Chandigarh Engineering College in Sector 26, a 40KW panel at a dispensary in the Police Lines of Sector 26, a 100KW panel at the Chandigarh District Court which roughly generates around 0.13 million units of power annually and also at Chandigarh Traffic Lines in Sector 29. The project would not only help in reducing the power bills of the respective departments but would also help in earning money by saving power.

Since Chandigarh and Nagpur have been selected as model solar cities by the government, the Chandigarh administration has been aggressively putting efforts to establish solar power plants at maximum number of government buildings.

The department has also sent a letter to the government to allow select companies to provide solar equipment at reasonable rates for allowing the installation solar panels to the residents of Chandigarh.
