delhimetroWednesday, August 13, 2014: Metro services are on a huge demand these days and now the government has come up with an exciting proposal that towns and cities, which have population of one million, will be having Metro projects very soon. This announcement has been made by Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday, 11 August.

The minister said, “Until now, we have been taking up only cities of about 2 million, but from now we are planning to take up to 1 million also.” The minister announced this proposal while launching a solar plant at Dwarka Sector 21 metro station and he attended the event along with Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal. The platform lights, which got power from this solar plant, were switched on through a remote. Naidu said further, “The need of the hour is to promote renewable energy because 80 per cent of our fossil fuel energy needs are being met through import, this is not a happy situation and we cannot continue it for long.”

He also said that India enjoys sunlight throughout the year but still is not capable enough to utilise this power in an appropriate way. Goyal also agreed with him on this point and said that the government will have its focus on developing renewable energy and India will emerge as the ‘renewable capital’ in the whole world. The units will sufficiently meet the power requirements of a metro station. Delhi Metro and German government-owned not-for-profit enterprise GIZ co-operated in creating this plant successfully. Delhi Metro has expanded their plans to set up more such plants at Yamuna Bank Metro station, Yamuna Bank depot, Anand Vihar Metro station, Pragati Maidan Metro station and the Metro residential complex at Pushp Vihar.
