One of the most important announcements that Reliance Industries (RIL) made at the 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM) was that of the launch of Jio GigaFiber broadband connectivity. Bharti Airtel – one of the biggest competitors of Reliance, had also declared the removal of fair usage policy (FUH) limit on its broadband services last month, and now it looks like both the telco giants are set to face competition from each other.

Airtel’s no FUH is valid only in Hyderabad

The scrapping of FUP is applicable only in four plans of Airtel – Rs 349, Rs 449, Rs 699 and Rs 1,299. Last month, an official release by Airtel stated that every Airtel broadband user in Hyderabad circle will be eligible to avail unlimited broadband data. However, the company’s broadband users in any other corner of India will continue to avail the old plan wherein they will get a data limit of 100 GB for using a broadband plan of Rs 799.

The telecom major also announced that all broadband subscribers of Airtel will be able to avail a discount of 15 to 20 per cent depending on their plans. Subscribers choosing a six-month broadband plan will be given a 15 per cent discount while those who go for a yearly plan will be offered a 20 per cent discount.

Jio GigaFiber will offer 1Gbps Internet speed to 1,100 cities

Airtel announced that it would offer an Internet speed of up to 8Mbps for its subscribers who opt for Rs 349 plan and a speed of up to 100Mbps for those who avail the Rs 1,299 plan. On the other hand, Reliance’s Jio GigaFiber is expected to provide 1Gbps speed once its registrations open for 1,100 cities across India on August 15.

‘Unlimited data’ for non-commercial usage only

According to the official release by Airtel, the ‘unlimited’ facility is only available to selected cities (other cities other than Hyderabad will be soon revealed) and for “non-commercial usage” only. Usage of 3TB data per month is defined as commercial usage and the unlimited data facility has not been specified for the same.
