Big Tech’s commitment of Rs 1,003 crore to build a cover glass plant near Chennai is a testament to the potential and attractiveness of Tamil Nadu as an investment destination.

US-based Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between Optiemus Infracom Ltd and Corning International Corporation, plans to establish a new facility in Tamil Nadu with an outlay of Rs 1,003 crore. On Tuesday the company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government in the presence of Chief Minister M K Stalin.
The company will establish this facility at the SIPCOT Pillaipakkam Industrial Park in the Kanchipuram district. The new facility will manufacture front-cover glasses for electronic devices like mobile phones. New York-based Corning International, known for introducing Corning Gorilla Glass, is a crucial supplier to Apple and 45 other smartphone brands, including OnePlus and Samsung.

This development, in the backdrop of the $155 billion Indian electronics market, is a promising sign of growth and prosperity. The global shift in supply chains away from China and the Indian government’s production-linked incentives are further boosting electronics manufacturing. Tamil Nadu, with its existing key suppliers to Apple, is now set to become an even more significant hub for electronics manufacturing.
