Italian automaker unveils the Milano urban SUV, the successor to the Giulietta, offering a choice between mild-hybrid petrol or electric power.

Alfa Romeo has unveiled the Milano, marking its third SUV and its inaugural series-production electric vehicle. The Milano, named after the brand’s birthplace, is an urban-focused crossover that aims to be the spiritual successor to the Giulietta and Mito hatchbacks. It focuses on accessibility while also offering premium appeal and driver engagement, aiming to attract a new generation of Alfisti.

Jean-Philippe Imparato, the boss of Alfa Romeo, stated that the Milano is designed to transition the brand from exclusive to inclusive. He emphasized that the Milano would be part of the same lineup as the ultra-exclusive 33 Stradale, showcasing Alfa Romeo’s unique ability to sell cars at both high and low price points.

Imparato also mentioned that the Milano revives the legacy of the much-missed Mito and Giulietta. The Milano features bold new design elements while also paying homage to classic Alfa Romeos with its swollen wheel arches, ‘coda tronca’ rear end, and SZ-inspired headlights. A standout feature is the reinterpretation of Alfa’s traditional front grille, which includes stylized elements from the brand’s logo in electric versions.

The Milano shares a platform with the Citroën C4, Fiat 600, Jeep Avenger, and Peugeot 2008 and offers a choice of electric or mild-hybrid petrol power. The Milano Ibrida pairs a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a 48V starter-generator and a 28bhp electric motor in the six-speed automatic gearbox for 134bhp and the capability for short-distance EV running. A four-wheel-drive version will be released later, marking a first in the premium segment.

The Milano Elettrica features a 54kWh battery, allowing for a range of 255 miles / 410 kilometres and capable of 100kW charging. It has a front-mounted 154bhp motor with specific calibration for excellent performance and a sporty drive. Alfa Romeo emphasizes the crossover’s optimal mass distribution and best-in-class driving dynamics, tuned by the same team responsible for the Giulia GTA super-saloon.

The top Veloce variant of the EV is designed as the most driver-focused Milano, with a 237bhp front-mounted motor, a Torsen limited-slip differential, and enhanced driving dynamics features. Alfa Romeo boasts the most direct steering in the segment and a chassis overhaul focused on agility.

The Milano offers various techno features, including a hands-free boot lid, LED matrix lights, and a virtual assistant. The interior options range from Premium with vinyl-fabric upholstery and a massaging driver’s seat to Sport with Sabelt seats and Alcantara trim. The high-spec Speciale launch edition is currently available for order.

All versions feature a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and an infotainment touchscreen, as well as a 400-litre boot. The EV model includes a front cable storage bay inspired by the storage areas of Alfa Romeo’s rear-engined supercars.

The Milano is now available for order in Italy and will be launched in 28 markets over the next six months.
