Wi-LAN Inc. (WiLAN), a Quarterhill Inc. (Quarterhill) company today announced that WiLAN’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Xueshan Technologies Inc.(Xueshan), has acquired a second portfolio of approximately 2,000 patents from MediaTek Inc. (MediaTek), a global fabless semiconductor company, headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
The acquired patents relate to a variety of technologies including power management ICs, RF ICs, embedded and NFC microcontrollers, as well as image processors.
Elpis Technologies, another subsidiary of WiLAN), had recently acquired an additional portfolio of patents from International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). These patents relate to semiconductor manufacturing process technologies. All other terms of the agreement are confidential.
WiLAN’s revenue during the third quarter of 2020 was $88 million. It also appointed John Rim as chief financial officer.
“Q3 was a busy and successful period for Quarterhill and its portfolio companies. On October 8, we announced preliminary Q3 revenue of $80-87 million and Adjusted EBITDA of $32-36 million and we are pleased to have come in above the high-end of the range for both metrics,” said Paul Hill, President and CEO of Quarterhill.
He added, “These strong results were driven by a record quarter at IRD and by substantial licensing activity at WiLAN, which had its best quarter in three years. At the same time, Quarterhill delivered on its promise to return additional capital to shareholders via completion of our substantial issuer bid and the commencement of our normal course issuer bid. Q3 results, combined with our already strong balance sheet, are enabling us to consider a broad set of M&A opportunities.”
