Samsung Workers Protest, Demand Better Pay and Working Conditions

The union officials are now looking to meet the top management of Samsung Electronics directly. The officials are however not looking to stop any chip lines under the protest and strike banner

Unionised workers of Samsung Electronics, as per a report by the Reuters, have noted that they would go on a strike if their demands are not met. The workers, as per the report, are demanding higher pay and better working conditions.

There was a rally organized by the union representatives near Samsung’s headquarter in Korea yesterday. These representatives have called for more paid leaves and health benefits as well.

“There are many options, one of which is a strike. We will continue to fight to ensure wage negotiations and collective bargaining with not only Samsung Electronics, but also all unions of Samsung affiliates, “Reuters quoted one of the leaders of the four unions representing workers of Samsung Electronics.

The union officials are now looking to meet the top management of Samsung Electronics directly. The officials are however not looking to stop any chip lines under the protest and strike banner. Samsung had avoided the concept of unionisation until the end of 2010s.

Samsung took the lead in 2021 (semiconductor market) with a strong DRAM and NAND flash market performance at the expense of Intel’s relatively flattish results. The company topped with USD 20.958 billion in sales, up 13.0 percent from the previous quarter. Intel, the largest MPU maker, was limited as overall MPU revenue in Q3 2021 was nearly flat, up just 0.5 percent. Samsung India’s revenue in FY21, as per the regulatory filings, stood at Rs 75,886 crore.

The company is also in the final stages of finalising the construction of a $17 billion semiconductor factory in Williamson County in the U.S. state of Texas The factory will make advanced logic semiconductor chips and is likely to create about 1,800 jobs, Samsung previously said in filings to state officials.
