The Northeastern states would require to double the telecom infrastructure with Meghalaya alone would need as many as 2,162 mobile towers, an industry group said to Economic Times on Monday.
Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA) in a recent statement said that at present there are around 7,184 mobile towers in Northeast which needs to doubled up in the forthcoming time to support emerging technologies.
It further said that Meghalaya alone would require 2,162 new mobile towers for basic network connectivity across 2,374 villages that were already identified.
The group also said that Meghalaya has become a fourth Northeastern state to notify the Right of Way rules aligned with the 2016 policy formulated by the Department of Telecom (DoT) to accelerate telecom infrastructure deployment. The new norms will come into effect from 15th January 2019.
Other states like Manipur, Sikkim, Nagaland, and Mizoram should also notify a state tower policy immediately to empower their citizens, TAIPA added.
