Wednesday, August 14, 2013: India’s manufacturing sector is set to take a giant leap, with the government announcing a slew of measures to boost domestic manufacturing. As a result, various companies catering to different sectors such as consumer electronics, telecom equipment, computers and solar energy are gearing up to expand their production facilities in India. With the government promoting the solar sector as well, many solar plants are coming up in the country. Besides these, India is also witnessing the setting up of many testing centres and design houses.

Who will benefit

The setting up of new production facilities, solar plants, testing centres and design houses will help in the development of many other sectors like tools and equipment, test and measurement (T&M) devices, surface mount technology (SMT) as well as through-hole machines, components, chemicals and consumables.

SFO Technologies

Area of operations: Electronics manufacturing services and software solutions

SFO Technologies is setting up a automotive component manufacturing facility each in Chennai and Noida. With these two plants, the company plans to enter the automotive components manufacturing sector. The Noida unit will be set up with an initial investment of Rs 200 million and will have a staff strength of 150, which the company plans to increase to 500 in the next three years. Its Chennai facility will be established with an estimated cost of Rs 300 million.

Samsung Electronics

Manufactures: Consumer electronics, industrial components

Samsung plans to invest over Rs 5000 million to ramp up its mobile production capacity in India. Seeing the growing need and requirement of Indian market, Samsung plans to increase its capacity. Its Noida facility manufactures latest high-end smartphone Samsung Galaxy S4 wherein about 35 to 40 million phones are manufactured annually, including 12 smartphones models such as Galaxy S III. The company has also approached government in this regard to take benefit of policy announcements and other incentives.

GEO Semiconductor (India) Pvt Ltd

Area of operations: Software and systems solutions based on highly efficient ICs

GEO Semiconductor has established a state-of-art R&D facility in Bengaluru on the technology corridor of the Outer Ring Road. The facility houses highly skilled engineering staff in areas of chip design, hardware engineering and embedded software. It also has a multimedia and audio testing lab along with cutting edge software, hardware and chip design tools. The India facility is set to play a key R&D role in order to create end-to-end solutions for international as well as domestic markets. The company has also set up its sales and marketing team in India.

Tejas Networks Ltd

Area of operations: Telecom equipment manufacturing

Tejas Networks plans to invest around Rs 17,690 million to build and expand its capabilities in the area of new generation technologies such as 3G and 4G LTE. The company plans to expand its existing capabilities in Bengaluru and Puducherry. With its new investments and product range, Tejas Networks is targeting to address about 60 per cent of the overall needs of telecom operators in the next 10 months. It has applied for a subsidy from the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) under the modified special incentive package scheme (M-SIPS).

Alva Lighting

Manufactures: LED lights

Alva Lighting has set up a new plant at Rudrapur in Uttarakhand to manufacture commercial lighting products under the brand name Alva. To start with, the company will assemble all the components at this factory and gradually get all the components manufactured in-house. The plant, with a capacity of 3000 pieces a day, will start operations in August this year.
