Electric vehicles registrations crossed over 50,000 units for the first-time ever in a month in December 2021

Out of 8,47,544 vehicles that were in use by government agencies, 5,384 vehicles are electric, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari informed the Parliament.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Gadkari said the maximum number of electric vehicles used by local authorities (1,352), followed by government undertakings (1,273) and state governments (1,237). These include central and state governments and autonomous bodies.

Last year, Gadkari said that the government is encouraging adoption of electric vehicles and use of alternative fuels like ethanol, bio-LNG, green hydrogen, but it will not stop registration of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

The road transport and highways minister noted that the sale of EVs has increased as people are giving good response.

Overall EV sales in December 2021 clocked 50,866 units, recording a 240 per cent YoY jump from the number recorded in December 2020. There was also a 21 per cent month-on-month (MoM) growth compared to November 2021.

Maharashtra (13 per cent), Karnataka (nine per cent), Rajasthan (eight per cent) and Delhi (seven per cent) were the other states in the top five positions. Tamil Nadu too contributed seven per cent of total EV registrations in India in December 2021.
