Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad

In the ongoing monsoon session of parliament, IT and Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India’s rapid growth in electronics manufacturing.

Highlighting the ‘Make in India’ programme, he said that electronics manufacturing in India has more than doubled under the leadership of PM Modi.

“In 2014-15, electronics worth ₹1.90 Lakh Crore were produced which increased to ₹4.58 Lakh Crore in 2018-19,” he noted, adding that this growth in electronics manufacturing also resulted in the creation of 20 lakh jobs in the country.

The present government is aiming a trillion-dollar digital economy for India and Prasad believes that boosting the startup ecosystem can help achieve it. He said that the government will work on increasing the involvement of startups in a bigger way to further improve electronics manufacturing in India.

Currently, there are 19,000 startups in India, out of which 7,000 startups are tech startups and eight startups have become unicorns (i.e. having a value of over $1 billion), he pointed out.

A boom in mobile phone manufacturing companies

According to the Minister, there are now 38 LCD and LED TV manufacturing companies in the country, and this has been made possible by the ‘Make in India’ programme. Today, 80 percent of the consumers’ demand can be made by these Indian companies, he noted.

“When the Modi government came into power, there were only two mobile phone manufacturing factories in India. Today the number has gone up to 268. The annual production of mobile phones has also increased to 1, 70,000 Crore from 18,090 Crore earlier and as many as 6.7 lakh people have been provided employment,” he said in the Lok Sabha.

He also appreciated the effort of Government of Uttar Pradesh led by CM Yogi Adityanath for their efforts in supporting electronics manufacturing. He said Noida and Greater Noida alone has 93 mobile manufacturing units. South India, specially Andhra Pradesh, is also growing fast in the field of electronics manufacturing, he added.

The ruling government is determined to further improve the country’s electronics manufacturing industry under the ‘Make in India’ programme, Prasad stated.
