  • The toolbox will be a standard set of applications that will identify all the risks and create an inventory, test and check hardware and software and identify products, services and suppliers that are potentially not secure
  • The process was started in March this year and will be finalised by the year-end
  • There is also a Cybersecurity Act in the EU that is coming into play and the Indian government has also shown a keen interest in it

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) are keen on a “toolbox” being developed by the European Union (EU) that will look at a standard practice of testing 5G equipment makers, possible risks and mitigate any hardware and software threats.

Benoit Sauveroche, First Counsellor-Information and Communications Technology (ICT), of the EU delegation to India, told Economic Times that before the end of this year, with this set of toolbox, it should lead to a series of applications including testing standards and that is what DoT is actually interested in.

The toolbox, in this case, will be a standard set of applications that will identify all the risks and create an inventory, test and check hardware and software and identify products, services and suppliers that are potentially not secure.

This comes at a time when the Indian government is considering whether to include or keep out Chinese equipment maker Huawei from its 5G trials and subsequent deployment due to allegations of snooping leveled by the US.

The process was started in March this year and will be finalised by the year-end. The first counselor said that the Indian government has shown a keen interest in the recommendations by the member countries. The Indian government’s representatives have also visited the testing labs in EU.

There is also a Cybersecurity Act in the EU that is coming into play and the Indian government has also shown a keen interest in it.
