Importers would be required to submit advance information in an online system and obtain an automatic registration number

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade has notified an amendment in the import of incorporated chips (ICs) policy, as per which,  it has made import registration mandatory for a number of electronic integrated circuits under chip imports monitoring system (CHIMS), effective from August 1.

The items include electronic integrated circuits like processors and controllers, electronic integrated circuits–memories, and electronic integrated circuits like amplifiers.

As per the new amendment, importers would be required to submit advance information in an online system for the import of such products and obtain an automatic registration number by paying a specified fee.

Additionally, importers cannot apply for registration 60 days before the expected arrival date of the consignment and can then apply till the date of the consignment arrival. The registration number will be valid for a period of 75 days.

This comes as the government accelerates its efforts under the ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ vision to reduce dependency on imports and promote manufacturing in the country.
