By Richa Chakravarty

As India grapples with a chronic power shortage, soaring energy prices and the looming threat of global climate change, solar energy has emerged as the most attractive sustainable energy option. With the stimulus packages from the government, grid and off-grid installations are the major application areas for solar modules. Today, solar modules are being used for commercial, industrial as well as residential purposes—for rooftop installations, lighting kits, telecom towers, solar charging stations, traffic signals, streetlights, etc. Most importantly, solar power is very beneficial in rural areas for household lighting, street lighting and for irrigation pumps.

The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) has triggered demand, and industry experts project the Indian solar PV market to account for 700-800 MW by the end of 2011. With many players diversifying into this domain or considering an entry into the sector, it seems that the Indian solar industry will now grow faster.

Today, India has more than 50 module manufacturers, all of whom are bullish about the potential of this market. As the module prices go down, the cost of generating solar power is declining, too. However, for India to emerge as a large market, it is imperative to have a centralised single window clearance for solar projects. For the stipulated deadline of March 2013, which is the first phase of the JNNSM, the government has targeted the completion of 1000 MW of energy generating capacity through grid scale power projects. Hence, players are hopeful that the solar sector in India will take off well.

Electronics Bazaar has attempted to rank the leading solar module manufacturing companies in India based on their revenue, which was verified from the website of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), Government of India.

Some of the top companies like Bharat Electronics Ltd, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Reliance Solar, Lanco, Delta and Rajasthan Electronics & Instruments Ltd could not be included in the ranking as the revenues of their solar divisions alone were not available. Some other companies also could not be included as their revenues for the FY 2009-10 was not available. Therefore, this Top 15 list of solar module manufacturers may not be comprehensive, but it does provide an idea about India’s major solar module manufacturers.
