The main reason why it is vital to maintain the humidity around production areas to a minimum is that of the reaction of lithium to water. The vapour in the air acts as a catalyst. Thus the rate of occurrence of these reactions depends on the moisture levels, and the amount of time the batteries were exposed to that moisture. The gases produced due to these reactions cause an increase in the internal air pressure of the batteries which can lead to expansion. Higher will be the moisture poorer will be the quality of the products. Dry rooms provide an economical and efficient solution for the dry air required during the production. High-grade dehumidifiers in the dry rooms control the moisture levels of the battery manufacturing areas at -140C to -900C depending upon the requirements of the process.

Moreover, during production, the battery generates hydrofluoric acid which can destroy the dehumidification capabilities of the dehumidifier by 30-50%. Therefore, it is crucial that only desiccant dehumidifiers of highest quality must be used so that the chemical will not be able to deteriorate its capacity. Other important factors to consider for maintaining the quality of product are;

  • The air change rate in the manufacturing room must be more than 59 air changes per hour. A minimum fresh air introduction that keeps the room pressure stable and provides ventilation for the workers.
  • The temperature of the room must always be at the recommended levels. It should be around 250C with a tolerance limit of +/- 20C.
  • The moisture content should be less than 14 grams per kg of dry air.
