The dry room solutions provide stable environments to contain the solid state of graphene, lithium-ion phosphate and lithium ions as they have high affinity to moisture

Manufacturers of the leading battery production companies are ramping up their production facilities to meet these increasing demands. However, only a few manufacturing industries have equipment that are required to manufacture high-quality lithium batteries. During the production of lithium batteries, precise humidity control is one of the most important criteria. One can say that the dew point of the manufacturing area must be as low as -600C. To fulfil these precise requirements, dry room solutions become essential for the manufacturers.

Importance of Dry Room Solutions

The technology of lithium battery manufacturing has been changing dramatically over the years. New experiments and material testing is done every day to fit the growing demand for the batteries while keeping the cost to a minimum. Therefore, it becomes critical that the innovations and high-performance battery production methods take place in specifically designed humidity controlled dry rooms. The dry room solutions provide stable environments to contain the solid state of graphene, lithium-ion phosphate and lithium ions as they have high affinity to moisture.

A reaction of lithium with the water in air is exothermic. It generates heat that forms hydrogen and lithium hydroxide. The heat caused due to this reaction can lead to charred batteries or even explosion. Therefore, for the safety of the production area and the workers in it minimising the moisture content with extremely low dewpoint becomes critical. Dry room solutions help in providing high levels of product yield, energy efficiency, storage capacity, cycle life and quality control.

Areas where Dry room solutions are necessary during battery manufacturing

  • Testing
  • Cathode Production
  • Electrolyte Filling in The Cells
  • Electrode Insertion
  • Battery Assembling Area
  • Glass to Metal Sealing
  • Cover Attachment to Power Collector

Ideal Dry Room Conditions

The main reason why it is vital to maintain the humidity around production areas to a minimum is that of the reaction of lithium to water. The vapour in the air acts as a catalyst. Thus the rate of occurrence of these reactions depends on the moisture levels, and the amount of time the batteries were exposed to that moisture. The gases produced due to these reactions cause an increase in the internal air pressure of the batteries which can lead to expansion. Higher will be the moisture poorer will be the quality of the products. Dry rooms provide an economical and efficient solution for the dry air required during the production. High-grade dehumidifiers in the dry rooms control the moisture levels of the battery manufacturing areas at -140C to -900C depending upon the requirements of the process.

Moreover, during production, the battery generates hydrofluoric acid which can destroy the dehumidification capabilities of the dehumidifier by 30-50%. Therefore, it is crucial that only desiccant dehumidifiers of highest quality must be used so that the chemical will not be able to deteriorate its capacity. Other important factors to consider for maintaining the quality of product are;

  • The air change rate in the manufacturing room must be more than 59 air changes per hour. A minimum fresh air introduction that keeps the room pressure stable and provides ventilation for the workers.
  • The temperature of the room must always be at the recommended levels. It should be around 250C with a tolerance limit of +/- 20C.
  • The moisture content should be less than 14 grams per kg of dry air.

In conclusion, one can say that the requirement of stringent atmospheric conditions during lithium-ion battery manufacturing is critical. If the conditions do not match the requirements, it can lead to fatal losses of life and revenue. To protect and enhance the production quality manufacturers must install dry room solutions in their production areas so that they can meet the market requirements with their best quality products.
